What Is Motorcycle Radiator Fluid/Engine Coolant?

Virtually all modern internal combustion engines, from those found in cars to motorcycles and ATVs, require radiator fluid to help keep them cool — hence the other name for this fluid, “coolant.” Coolant circulates throughout the engine as it runs, drawing heat away from rapidly-moving parts. Once that heat has been absorbed, it travels to the radiator, where it can be cooled back down as air moves across the radiator while you ride. This cycle happens continuously as long as the engine is running, keeping it at a safe operating temperature. Coolant is a special fluid packed with additives and antifreeze agents, keeping the fluid liquid even in sub-freezing temperatures. It also helps to fight corrosion that can degrade your engine over time.

Why Do I Need Coolant Exchange For My Motorcycle?

Over time, the additives in the engine coolant will break down from the intense heat and friction inside the engine. This can allow corrosion to develop, which can cause damage to the engine over time. The engine coolant also helps capture dirt and dust that enters the engine’s intake — keeping that debris suspended in the fluid instead of making the engine itself dirty. Most importantly, old engine coolant can’t absorb as much heat as fresh coolant, potentially allowing the engine to overheat.

How Often Do I Need To Perform A Coolant Exchange Service On My Motorcycle?

Check the maintenance schedule provided with the owner’s manual of your bike to find out what the manufacturer recommends for your specific model. As a rule of thumb, you should have the coolant exchanged on your motorcycle every 2 years or 24,000 miles.
